Documenting the Transformation of VCBIA

Long term visual documentation of critical aviation systems during active construction

Public Infrastructure as a Living System

Aecon is one of Canada’s most trusted infrastructure builders, operating in environments where scale, safety, and public consequence converge. Its work sits at the intersection of engineering precision and national responsibility, delivering systems that must function flawlessly long after construction ends.

Working Within Active, Regulated Environments

Aecon’s mandate goes beyond building. It is about translating public need into resilient, real world systems, managing complexity at scale, and protecting what cannot be compromised. Human life and worker dignity. Public trust in critical infrastructure. Continuity across regulatory, environmental, and operational demands. Within this context, safety is not treated as a rule set, but as a system embedded into every decision.

A Longitudinal Record of Change

Spencer Branding Studio was involved from the beginning of the project, embedded across its lifecycle rather than brought in to document outcomes after the fact. Our role focused on cinematography and photography, capturing the progression of construction as a living system over time. The work was developed to serve multiple long term functions, including project reporting, stakeholder communication, institutional records, marketing, and future redevelopment reference.

Aerial Perspective Without Interruption

The project centred on major rehabilitation works at V.C. Bird International Airport, a critical aviation gateway for the region. Scope included the construction of a new aircraft turning bay and the resurfacing of the existing runway, aligning the facility with standards set by the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority and the International Civil Aviation Organization. These upgrades were designed to enhance safety and operational efficiency within an active, highly regulated airspace.

Visual Accountability at National Scale

The visual approach prioritised clarity over spectacle. Aerial and ground based cinematography were used to reveal scale, sequencing, and spatial relationships without disrupting live operations or compromising safety protocols. By documenting the site consistently over time, the work preserves continuity across phases, supports institutional knowledge, and provides a reliable visual record of complex systems in motion.

Result

The result is a body of work that reflects Aecon’s position with precision. Infrastructure as stewardship. Construction as disciplined risk management. Visual documentation not as marketing ornamentation, but as a critical layer of accountability, memory, and trust.
